The employee can submit their residence document (RD) either in person at the foreigners' police department (FPD) that has issued the RD, or they can send it via mail (recorded delivery is recommended).

Currently, due to the state of emergency declared because of the war in Ukraine, all types of residence permits (temporary, permanent, tolerated) are automatically extended – this means that the validity of the residence permit does not expire at the end of the period for which the FPD granted it. If foreigners are leaving Slovakia permanently, they must terminate their residence in writing in addition to submitting their RD.

A foreigner can terminate their stay by submitting a notice of termination of stay – the notice, along with the RD, can be submitted in person at the FPD or sent by mail.

If a foreigner needs a valid RD to travel to their home country, they may send the above-mentioned documents by mail from abroad. A certificate of submission of the RD or of the end of a foreigner's stay is not issued automatically.

After the termination of their stay, the foreigner may ask for a Certificate of Residence for a Foreign National, in which the FPD confirms that the foreigner was granted a residence permit in Slovakia. This confirmation is a public document, and foreigners may use it at government offices. An administrative fee (government stamp) of 4 € is charged for the confirmation, which can be purchased directly at the FPD. This certificate is issued in the Slovak language and can only be requested in person, or based on a granted power of attorney (the foreigner's signature must be officially verified); however, not every FPD allows an authorised person to request a certificate of residence for a foreign national. The FPD does not issue this confirmation immediately – the foreigner usually has to come and take it in person the following working day.
