The higher education institution providing a specific study field is responsible for recognising a higher education diploma in said field. The institution’s recognition, however, does not qualify the holder to practice a regulated profession.
If the applicant wishes to have their diplomas recognised in a specific field of study, the recognition of higher education diplomas, issued by a certified higher education institution in another member state or in a third country for the purpose of continuing studies or for other purposes, excluding the practice of regulated professions, the decision is made by:
- recognised higher education institution in the Slovak Republic, which offers study programmes in the same, or related fields of study as those listed on the educational certificate, or
- Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic, if that document is an educational certificate issued by a military university, or
- Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic, if that document is an educational certificate issued by a police academy.

The application must be submitted with the following attachments, in particular:
- copy of ID,
- certified copies of educational certificates,
- list of completed courses and exams taken,
- certified copy of amendment to the university diploma, if it is issued by an accredited institution of higher education,
- information about prior education completed before the education that is the subject of the application,
- proof of administrative fee payment (if the application is submitted electronically via the Central Government Portal, the payment instruction for the administrative fee will be generated automatically).
The applicant is required to submit the official translation of documents into the official language.
In addition to the documents mentioned above, the applicant may be required to provide further documents and information if necessary to assess the equivalence of the qualification document.
Administration Fee
Administrative fee for the recognition of an educational certificate, including the field of study:
- EUR 7 if the educational certificate is subject to bilateral agreement on the mutual recognition of the equivalence of educational documents with the state in which the document was acquired (service code in the eKolok web and mobile application: 1723)
- EUR 40 if no bilateral agreement applies to the educational document (service code in the eKolok web and mobile application: 2218)
Deadlines
The higher education institution or the relevant ministry will evaluate the request within 30 days of its delivery. If the application does not meet the prescribed requirements, the authority shall suspend the proceedings and invite the applicant to supply the missing documents or rectify the deficiencies of the application within 30 days of delivery of the request.
The higher education institution or the relevant ministry shall decide on the recognition of the educational document within two months of delivery of a complete application. The higher education institution or the relevant ministry shall decide on
- recognition of an educational certificate,
- rejection of an application for recognition of an educational certificate or
- setting a differential examination.
If the study programme/field of study specified in the submitted educational certificate can be compared with an accredited study programme at UNIZA, an application for the recognition may be submitted to the UNIZA Department of Education. Options for paying the administrative fee
- proof of payment of the administrative/court fee (so-called eKolok with QR code), which can be purchased in the required amount at Slovenská pošta (Slovak Post), a.s. offices.
- through mobile app eKolok, which is available under the name eKolok on Google Play / the App Store
- through web app eKolok, also called Virtual Kiosk (Virtuálny kiosk), available at a website https://m.ekolky.gov.sk
