Healthcare in Slovakia is funded through health insurance. Health insurance is mandatory in Slovakia, and health insurance documentation is also part of the process for granting temporary residence.

It is not possible to choose a country for your health insurance. The country responsible for your health insurance is determined by your employment situation or place of residence, not by citizenship.

Slovakia recognises 2 types of health insurance:

• Mandatory public health insurance
• Individual (commercial) health insurance

Holders of a temporary residence permit must obtain adequate health insurance starting from the date of their legal residence in Slovakia.

A natural person is subject to mandatory public health insurance if they do not have permanent residence in the Slovak Republic, are not covered by health insurance in another EU/EEA member state or Switzerland, and are employed by an employer that has its seat or a permanent establishment in the Slovak Republic.

Health care in Slovakia is provided by public health insurance or individual (commercial) health insurance Currently, public health insurance is provided by 3 insurance companies (Dôvera, Union, Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa). You can decide freely which company you want to be insured with, but you can only be insured with one of them (which you can change once a year).
